Traditions

  • Although still relatively young, the Martel Mentors have established several traditions in their quest to take Martel to the top. In the 2012-2013 school year, the Mentors hope to expand their activities to begin creating new traditions for Martel’s second decade. Likewise, the PAAs have a few traditions of their own.
  • Office Hours – An opportunity to receive tutoring, paper review, or homework help from the Mentors in the Martel Commons each Sunday night, often with free coffee or snacks. But also, a social / group / family study time for Martelians.
  • Lectures – Once-per-semester events in which a distinguished speaker is invited to deliver an address and facilitate discussion on an intellectual topic in the Martel Commons. Topics tend to be timely, and a reception with food and refreshments follows.
  • Martel Academic Research Symposium (MARS)- is a judged poster-presentation event with cash prizes held to showcase, share, and support Martelian research in preparation for the Rice Undergraduate Research Symposium (RURS) each Spring.
  • Academic Planning Session (APS)- hosted by the Martel Peer Academic Advisors shortly before registration takes place for the following semester of courses. These sessions review graduation rules and requirements, and help Martelians decide among classes.
  • Student Taught Course (STC)- At Rice, anyone can apply to teach a course affiliated with their College, and the Mentors are charged with facilitating this process. If you have a great idea for a Martel class, share it with them to help you make it a reality.
